We have some horror anime this month with Dark Gathering, which is available for streaming on Hidive & Hulu/Disney+.
The election is coming up in the United States – and in many states there is an option for early voting. In Oregon we do Vote By Mail (and also with ballot drop boxes), so have voted in the comfort of my home with a hot cup of coffee. This does mean we don’t get neat “I voted” stickers – but that’s okay. Instead, this weekend I’m going to borrow a custom from Australia, and have a homemade Democracy Sausage (though probably in an actual roll instead of a slice of bread – blasphemy, I know). So, this is my encouragement to you, if you are registered to vote, to go vote. And then have a yummy sausage, and maybe post a picture in the comments.
Nintendo’s getting antsy about who talks about their games and how, so Nintendo Power retrospectives is going to take some time off until Nintendo settles down.
I absolutely missed the boat on Spice & Wolf when it first aired – which probably may have worked out for the best, since the main series of novels was still ongoing at the time, so the original TV adaptation was never quite able to provide an adaptation of the big emotional climax of the story and its core romance. Fortunately, the series is back with a reboot, with much of the original cast returning, making for a good time to jump on board and see the story told once again.
Read moreSo, I’ve posted a bunch of pictures on the blog of Patacon, but I never really got around to talking about Patacon. I should do that.
Read moreSo, I had something else in mind for today, but recent events inspired me to write about something else – particularly something somewhat formative from my past – my time spent volunteering in my local library.
Read moreFor decades, the gateway to the works of Akira Toriyama in the US has been Dragon Ball Z – the point where Toriyama’s opus shifted gears from gag manga with fighting to shonen fight manga. In 2024, the year in which he sadly passed, we got an anime adaptation of another work, one which I think serves as a better jumping on point to Toriyama as an artist – Sand Land.

Also, I fell a little behind on putting episodes together, so I will be putting together a Youtube video on my experiences getting my CPAP machine and getting diagnosed with Sleep Apnea.
The Apothecary Diaries, in a few respects, drew me in by both being very similar but very different from a historical fiction mystery series I was really into when I was younger – the Brother Cadfael novels by Ellis Peters – which worked really well to hook me, with the characters and the mysteries keeping me hooked.
Read moreI got through my surgery and the recovery, so it’s time to give my thoughts on how the surgery went, along with a really quick update on the whole Polymega situation.
More information has come out about the appalling behavior of Dave McCarty and the Chengdu Worldcon committee, with a full report from File 770. I give some thoughts on the new revelations and next courses of action.
For the past few years – since the pandemic – I’ve done the unthinkable and watched anime with my parents. I talk about how that started, how it’s gone since then, and some of the series we selected and how that went.
So – I have more information on the procedure! The short news – I will definitely not be streaming that weekend, and might not be streaming for the week after – or if I do, I’ll have to not be on camera. This actually leads to another thing – the doctor’s estimated recouperation time after the surgery is going to be about 2 weeks minimum, with the thing that makes me not able to be on camera hopefully being done after 1 week.
What this may end up leading to is me doing is, if I do a video during that period, it’s probably going to be SF Debris style – with me strictly doing voiceover and editing – which is more work, but the good news is I’ll have the time to do it.
One other quick medical note – that I’m not just posting here because I need to fill space, but because this is a sincere reminder. I recently got tested for Sleep Apnea, and it was determined that I do, in fact, have Sleep Apnea and will be getting a CPAP machine in the not-too-distant future. Again, I’m probably going to go more-in-depth with this once I actually get the CPAP machine. However, suffice it to say that over the past few years I have had some problems sleeping, and family members have reported that I snore – along with my observing some of my own snoring while napping.
This, combined with paying attention to my sleep data on my FitBit and with it how rested I am or am not lead me to come to the conclusion that I should take on a sleep study and get tested. I’m glad I did that – pro wrestlers from promotions like ECW have died from Sleep Apnea (Johnny Grunge), and Ryan Davis (who had the pleasure to meet at San Diego Comic Con the one year I went) had to deal with it it as well – and my Mom also experiences it – so I felt it was worth getting tested. So, this is my prompt to you, my readers and viewers, if you have problems sleeping, if you have issues with snoring or other respiratory issues, if any sleep-tracker you use shows that say, you’re losing over an hour of sleep a night, consider getting tested for Sleep Apnia – it could improve your sleep and save your life.
As a quick Site news note – I will be undergoing surgery for that lump on the side of my face that you probably have noticed getting gradually larger over the past few months in the middle of March (specifically on the 14th and 15th). Naturally, this will cause some disruption to my stream schedule and workflow. I will try to get enough of a buffer together that this shouldn’t cause too much of a problem, but I will likely not be streaming that weekend.
I’m probably going to do something of a video about this after the procedure to talk about the experience, at least a little. However, if there’s a disruption in my schedule around that time – that’s why.
So, the Let’s Play is going to take a very short break due to some technical difficulties. My tale of woe lies below the cut.
