The first season of Frieren was a series that successfully struck a good balance between humor and melancholy. Season 2 is in the tricky place of having to maintain that balance. Thankfully, it manages to pull it off.

This season is focused almost entirely around Frieren’s party moving across the Northern Plateau, helping out beleaguered towns along the way. This leads to the main character focus being between Stark and Fern, and their growing feelings for each other – and in turn by proxy Frieren understanding Himmel’s feelings for her (only decades too late).

That said, everything season 1 did well is done well here. Great, but subtle, reaction faces from Fern, Stark, and Frieren. Tremendously fluid action scenes. If there’s one thing this season might be missing is it could do with a little more Frieren getting chewed on by a Mimic. Stark being something of the butt-monkey of the group makes up for it.

That said, the focus of the writing this season is on the people of the Northern Plateau, and why they choose to live there instead of moving south. It feels a lot like something written in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi Tsunami and disaster, and the people of that region wanting to go back home, and I could see something similar being written in the US after Hurricane Katrina.

It is in something of a position where if you didn’t like Season 1, this won’t change your mind. However, if you enjoyed Season 1, you’ll like Season 2.
