Something I didn’t quite anticipate when I started this project was that, well, prices for everything that uses NAND would start rising quite so high, quite so fast. Consequently, beyond getting an SSD for the server, I’m also having to get the ball rolling on the follow-up project as well.
As a reminder, one of the takeaways I had from my last Linux Project was that I would be better off building a couple bespoke Linux boxes, one as a media server, and the other as a Gaming PC, which would be consolized and hooked up to my TV. Around the time I started seriously getting into preparing for the server project, My Life In Gaming put up a video for Patreon backers about Try’s project to build a consolized gaming PC. The public video on that is up (and I’ll post that below).
Now, his computer used DDR5 RAM, which he was able to get from a friend. Additionally, he’s in a part of the country that has a MicroCenter. Oregon doesn’t have that chain, and our local equivalent (Fry’s) is out of business. After getting the components list and pricing out the project, I found it was now almost double what he paid. Further, with things being how they are, waiting for holiday sales would likely not be in my favor.
So, I ended up re-speccing the project to use DDR4. This also meant a change of processor to Intel – Try used AMD and there currently aren’t any AMD boards that support DDR4. This also meant that I basically had to use my tax refund to start getting the big ticket components now. So, I’ve ordered the RAM and SSD, and the next step is the video card. Everything else is affordable enough that I should be able to pick that up more slowly. While I’m getting the storage for the server.
Speaking of the server, with some research, I’ve found that probably my best option for an OS might actually be using Unraid. It allows for a level of expandability on the fly where I should be able to pick up the first couple of hard drives, and then build the server and get it online and move in. At which point I can add the additional hard drives I have in mind later, as I’m getting the other components for the Console Gaming PC.
So, now I have something of a road map for the rest of this project. I’ll have to see what kind of bumps in the road I encounter along the way.
