Film Review: Gosford Park

Gosford Park isn’t Robert Altman’s last film, but I think of his late career work, it’s the strongest. It still has some flaws, significant ones likely related to a failure to consider some aspects of the history of the mystery genre, but still good nonetheless.

Video Game Review: Fights in Tight Spaces

A while back, I wrote a review of Slay the Spire. I hadn’t beaten the game yet (and still haven’t – though I’ve successfully ascended with one of the classes), but I had played the game enough to get a handle on the structure and the mechanics. I’ve reached a similar point with Fights in Tight Spaces, but here I don’t think I’m going to be continuing to play the game.

RPG Thoughts: Tactile RPGs

This weekend (that is, the weekend of 7/31-8/2/2026) at GenCon has seen the announcement of Vampire: The Masquerade V6. There has been some wailing and gnashing of teeth, as is often the case with the announcement of a new edition of a role-playing game. Of note with this edition of Vampire is a mechanical complaint that’s different from the usual – in the new edition the Storyteller doesn’t roll dice. This is not a new situation in tabletop RPGs these days – it’s a common mechanical trait of games that are Powered by the Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark, along with other mechanical frameworks that have come after. However, I think where it’s notable here, and why I think games that were Forged in the Dark or Powered by the Apocalypse didn’t quite catch on when they were being so heavily promoted in the wake of the D&D 5E OGL catastrophe is that there is a tactile element that’s missing. Not Tactical – tactile. Allow me to explain.

Anime Review: Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk

The Spring 2026 season had one of those weird, likely unintentional synergies. Much as when, a few years ago, we had the first season of MF Ghost and Overtake airing at the same time, that season had the start of Drops of God alongside a yuri romance anime that was also about booze called Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk. For the sake of manageability, I’m just going to refer to the anime by the character’s first name, and the character by her first name.
