In my previous installment, I’d run into problems booting into TrueNAS on my planned home rolled Media Server. I’d ordered a USB Ethernet adapter to test the drop, and do some further investigations. Well, I’ve got some results – and they’re expensive.
Perhaps the good news out of this is that the drop worked – there was an active network connection. The bad news was that between my writing that blog post and receiving the adapter in the morning, a user on one of the Discord servers I was turning to for advice looked over the specs I’d posted, and found that particular AMD chipset and video card were particularly poorly suited for running Linux, at the time of that Firmware version, back in 2012. I did a test boot of Debian off of a Live USB, just to be safe, and was unable to get a picture after booting into the OS.
In short, I would have been better suited buying a pre-built NAS, rather than rolling my own. My, rather expensive, lesson has been learned, as I’ve put in an order for a UGreen NAS with 4 drive bays.
My next steps from here are to move my drives out of the computer chassis and into the new, and then to take the old case to FreeGeek.
