The NAS is online.

After my last blog post, I had ordered a UGreen NAS online (I tried to order directly from them to do less business from Amazon, only for it to be fulfilled by Amazon). The model I ordered was a DH4300 Plus, and it was incredibly easy to set up, to the point where the biggest problems I ran into were caused by my overthinking them.

For example – I wanted to set up a secure way to get to stuff on the server remotely, particularly my Kavita server. So, I spent days researching how to set up Tailscale as a solution, with trying to figure out how to set up sub-containers for the services that needed to get out of the server – only for a casual suggestion on one of the Discord servers I was going to for help to lead me to finding my router natively supported OpenVPN and WireGuard. Also, trying to figure out how to get Rclone up and running in a container so I could get my Calibre directory from Dropbox, only to find there’s just an app in the UGreen app store that does that.

By (as of the time I wrote this, not when it goes up), I had successfully confirmed I could connect to my Jellyfin library on one of my streaming devices, and successfully streamed some of the video that I’d been able to previously stream when the server was running on my main computer. I’d also successfully connected to my Kavita library on my Tablet. I still have a few more things to set up, but a lot of the important things have been configured.

I want to thank the users on the LoadingReadyRun and Brad and Will Made a Tech Pod Discords for their help with this part of the project. I wouldn’t have been able to make it without them. After I get my configuration of the server finished, my next step is to build my Linux gaming PC.
