Book Review: Making Comics
When I was in college at Clackamas Community College (where I also met David, one of my co-hosts of the Anime Explorations Podcast) – one of my campus jobs I worked was in the library, where I worked the check-out counter. As one of the classes that was thought (occasionally) was Comics as Literature, a selection of graphic novels were on reserve at the front desk, and during terms where the class was not offered, I would help myself to read them during downtime. One of the books I read during this time was Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud, and this inspired me to go on later to check out Reinventing Comics from my local library. It wasn’t until this year that I found out there was a third book in the series – Making Comics – and having found out about it, I checked that out from my local library as well.

A little bit back I reviewed Shards of Honor, the start of the Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold – which was a Swords & Laser book club pick. Well, that’s not exactly correct – it’s half of a Sword & Laser book club pick – it was instead selected as Cordelia’s Honor – a book that combines it with the novel Barrayar, which follows up right after it (and was originally intended to be the same book) – but got a few more passes for a later publication after the Bujold decided to split the two parts up, and which were later recombined. So, now it’s time for the rest of the story.

Quick Update on my Anime Holy Grails
Another item on my Anime Holy Grail List is getting a US release – AnimeNewsNetwork has reported that Gkids, in addition to distributing Angel’s Egg in theaters, will also be giving the film a physical release as well. Now, this is just one item on the list, so I’m not going to do a full revision as yet (I’ll want 3 items off the list before I add some replacements), but it’s good to see this title get distribution.
Here’s hoping I don’t have to wait too long for those next two titles to make it off the list.

Reminiscences Inspired by Current Events
So, I had something else in mind for today, but recent events inspired me to write about something else – particularly something somewhat formative from my past – my time spent volunteering in my local library.

Manga Review: We Started a Threesome – Vol. 2
It feels weird to be reviewing not just softcore erotica, but a manga series that is softcore erotica, but here I am. I attribute this to the fact that other series by Katsu Aki have gotten releases here, but undoubtedly his biggest work, in terms of length, and the one that he will most likely be remembered for after his passing – like Toriyama with Dragonball & Dr. Slump – is Futari Ecchi, a series that seeks to both educate and arouse. So, when the first volume of We Started A Threesome ended on a cliffhanger related to the risk of sexual assault, I felt a little hesitant to recommend it. I feel a little better about a recommendation now, though it’s still one with some caveats.
Also, no cover excerpt this time, it’s very NSFW.

Book Review: Shards of Honor
Shards of Honor is the book that kicks off the long-running Vorkosigan series, though this book serves more of a “How I Met Your Mother” story – only in a case where the fact that our two leads will get together is a foregone conclusion strictly because I’m reading this now after there have been a slew of sequels based around their son, Miles. So the question then becomes, “How does this book hold up when you know that there’s only one destination it can arrive at?”
