2025 New Year’s Resolutions: Anime

I didn’t quite get through all my shows that I’d picked for my 2024 New Year’s Resolutions this year, and to a degree this is a bit of my own doing, because I’d also not accounted to something that I had at my disposal: the podcast. Several of the shows that I’d picked, honestly, would have been good podcast fodder. Admittedly, some of those were also shows that would have been difficult to do on the podcast due to lack of streaming availability (like Betterman, Freedom, or Teknolyze). However, other ones – including one of the leftover shows, were. So, when it came to doing my list for this year, I put my list together based on two things: what would finish up the AniList Advanced Challenge for me and what would make for good podcast fodder.

Gankutsuo

This is my carryover from this year – and also one which is, as of this writing, available for streaming on Crunchyroll. Also, because it’s adapted from literature, a potentially good pick for a September series.

ToraDora

This is an anime series I watched in part at an anime club at some point after I’d left CCC and Stream. I enjoyed what I saw, and then never got around to watching the rest of it after joining the club partway through, and then ultimately departing the club before it finished. This wasn’t due to the selection of shows – there were several shows we were watching that I liked. More that there was a particularly obnoxious club member who had a messy divorce, and would make angry rants during any romantic comedy anime – which was an issue because we were watching three Rom-Coms: ToraDora, Lovely Complex, and Allison To Lillia.

In any case, for our March romantic series, thus far we’ve done an adaptation of a Shonen/Seinen manga (My Dress-up Darling), an adaptation of a Shojo/Josei manga (Loving Yamada-Kun at Lv 999). We have not done a light novel yet, so this feels like a good fit.

Mushi-shi

There’s also a space for a horror anime on the schedule, and unless we get a new season of Dark Gathering, we have some options, and Mushi-Shi seems like another solid pick – a series that, from what I’ve previously read on it, towards the eerie rather than the spooky, which is going to be a nice shift from doing Post Apocalyptic Western Hammer Horror like Vampire Hunter D, J-Horror Ghost Of The Week like Dark Gathering, or the low key Adolescent Dread of Boogiepop and Others.

A Silent Voice

For December I like to do films – December can get busy with holidays, so having some thing short and sweet helps (that’s why we’re doing Animal Treasure Island this year, Arcadia of My Youth last year, and did Nutcracker Fantasy two years ago). A Silent Voice is a film I’ve overlooked, and which honestly I feel bad about missing, both because of it having been shortlisted for an Academy Award, and because some of the staff from Kyoto Animation who worked on it were killed in the Kyoto Animation fire.

The Helpful Fox Senko-San

We have covered comedy anime on the show, but never really much in terms of healing anime, outside of arguably My Neighbor Totoro. It’s time to rectify that some, with this probably being a pretty good April pick, before going into the Early Summer Of JoJo. Also, considering how potentially stressful the next 4 years will be, we’re going to need something light.

The rest of my main picks are going to be shows that I’m going to be watching on my own, either due to length or streaming availability.

  • Monster
  • Golden Boy
  • Yona of the Dawn
  • Demon Slayer

I’ll be honest – Demon Slayer is a cultural institution, and I haven’t watched a single episode. I’ve at least watched an episode of Attack on Titan and decided I wasn’t in the right head space for it (and am still not sure when I will be). I should give Demon Slayer a shot. For Monster – Netflix license rescued it, and it’s an adaptation of a manga I love, so I absolutely need to try to watch it before the Netflix license expires. Golden Boy has been memed to hell, so I should probably check out where those memes come from. Finally, I heard things about Yona of the Dawn from the Mangasplaining podcast, and I’m interested in giving the anime a watch.

Those are my Anime Resolutions for this year – let’s see if my increased ambition pans out.
