I Have A Crush At Work: Anime Review

So, in the interest of full disclosure – this is me reviewing a show that isn’t actually officially licensed for a US release yet, so I’m not going to make any comments about the quality of the translation on here (not just due to my lack of fluency). In this case, I’m taking a look at one of the more comedic the romantic comedies of this season – I Have A Crush At Work.

I Have A Crush At Work is a show where the title pretty much explains the gimmick pretty well – it’s a workplace romantic comedy about coworkers dating. The story does a pretty good job of eliminating anything that could make that skeevy – they work in different departments (the male lead, Masugu, is in accounting while the female lead, Yui, is in planning and development), neither of those departments is HR, and neither is particularly in a position where they have any sort of authority over the other on larger projects. They are trying to keep this secret from their co-workers, but more just because workplace gossip sucks.

And that’s the whole thing – the show is an episodic, slice-of-life sitcom about this couple. The show does introduce a second couple later on, but the focus stays on Masugu and Yui. It is very cute show, a very fun show, and generally very chill. I did appreciate tremendously that unlike so many other workplace romance series (like Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku), they do make it clear what this company actually does, and some elements of this even fit into the plot (they work for a confectionary company).

Honestly, I’m kinda bummed the show hasn’t been licensed – this feels like the perfect thing for Crunchyroll or Hidive to pick up to just round out the season, and hopefully, much like Girls Band Cry, this will get picked up later and just dropped on the service in its entirety. As it is, I’m probably going to end up reading the manga – which is available on Kodansha USA’s app.
