I’ve completed my first week of Linux, which has predominantly involved getting Linux set up on my computer.

When I started this experiment, the plan was to run Bazzite, as it was generally well-regarded as a user-friendly, easy-to-install and configure, and gaming-friendly Linux distribution. Well, that wasn’t entirely accurate.

The core problem that came up is that because Bazzite is meant to be an immutable Linux distro, it also means that it doesn’t handle installing things that aren’t available in Flatpak’s very well – including things like setting up Docker containers and the like. This is a problem because, well, I’ve got a bunch of server projects, like Kavita, Jellyfin, and Foundry, that I need to install. The first two of those work best in Docker, and the last one doesn’t really have a Flatpak. So, rather than switching back and forth to Windows once a week, I decided to switch distros.

Thus, now I’m on Pop OS. It took the rest of the week to get everything configured – to get my additional drives that were formatted on Windows (and were thus on NTFS) have their mountings configured correctly, and so on.

Probably one of the bigger issues I’ve run into is that I’ve run into problems with some font issues. For example, the main font size in Pop OS, at the high resolutions I’m using, makes the text almost illegible tiny, so I have to use large fonts. Further, Davinci Resolve uses separate font scaling from the rest of the OS, so I had to hunt for that setting.

On top of that, the Linux version of Davinci Resolve doesn’t support the AAC audio codec for video, so any video files I used with AAC need to be transcoded to use FLAC for audio before I drop them into the editing software (if I’m going to use that audio). Now, Audacity should handle the original audio fine, so in some instances I can just manually convert the audio using Audacity, though for some files I’m going to stick with Handbrake.

At the latest, I’ll do a follow-up next month with updates on the status of the experiment.
