While the first season of Call of the Night was a series that was heavy on vibes and less on horror, the second season of the series does delve a little more into Vampire society – and also is something that really gets that while our little low-fi Camarillia is generally very chill, vampires are monsters – and even if the group that Ko is around doesn’t act like monsters, other Vampires can be monstrous.

Promotional Art for Call of the Night Season 2.

In particular, the driving force of this season (though there are still some side-plots with other vampires) is Anko Uguisu, a private investigator and vampire hunter who first appeared last season. Through her vampire hunting, we learn what the actual weaknesses of vampires are in this setting, more about Nazuna’s backstory, and the monstrous side of vampiric existence. Because Anko has tragedy in her backstory, and it’s related to vampires, and Nazuna knows at least part of that story.

The color palette of the show is just as vibrant as last season, and the animation and writing are equally on point. This is a show where the creative team behind it gets that this is a show that is dependent on characters and vibes as on plot. While the source material can provide the plot and characters, it’s up to the animation to give the vibes and make the night feel alive.

Otherwise, the worldbuilding continues absolutely its Lo-Fi Vampire: The Masquerade sensibilities. This season in particular puts a focus on the ways that the vampires try to hang on to their humanity, and the ways that can be used against them. It makes for a show that has some of the most human vampires in fiction, and thus the theme of the show becomes how the ways that our humanity and our connections to each other can sometimes make us monstrous, but also how those connections can keep the monstrous parts of ourselves away

It’s a really great continuation of the story, and I’m hoping we get a third season, because I’m down for more of this.
