Season 2 of DanDaDan starts on a messy cliffhanger that, I will admit, makes for a rough start, with Momo Ayase facing assault (with sexual overtones, but not actually sexual) in a Hot Springs, while Okarun and Jin are facing physical assault from a bunch of incredibly powerful old grannies in the home that Jin and his parents are renting. The question because, how well does it handle the payoff?

That cliffhanger leads to a massive battle in the house, and the catacombs under the house (where it turns out the landlords had been performing human child sacrifices for their pet cryptid). On top of that there’s Jin getting possessed (and spending several episodes in nothing but his briefs), and having to deal with the aftermath of that (including metal band assisted exorcism). Oh and there’s a classmate of Momo and Okarun who picks up that something is going on, and there’s a Kaiju to fight.

So, we get a lot of plot developments going on this season and a lot of fun action sequences, including additional clever and creative uses of classical music. It’s smart, it’s imaginative, and it’s fun. The animation is still great.

It is still kinda pervy – yeah, but also more on the guys this time. With Jin’s possession, we end up seeing a lot of him in his skivvies (also Okarun shirtless as well), which is a bit of a nice change. It’s still a teenager getting sexualized, but it feels rare that it’s dudes getting viewed in this way, especially something in a shonen series.

Also, the OP is a step down from Creepy Nuts, but it’s kinda hard to top them, and with them doing new OPs and EDs for Call of the Night this year I understand the lack of availability.

This was one of my highlights of the week, and I’m looking forward to Season 3.
