This time, we love it when a plan comes together.
The characters (The Vingaardians):
- Drystan Silverhart – Level 6 Aasimar Paladin (Knight of Solamnia)
- Yseult De Lorimar – Level 6 Human Warlock (Noble)
- “Fletch” Siannodel – Level 6 Kagonesti Elven Ranger (Folk Hero)
- Sabelina – Level 6 Human Cleric of Gilean (Acolyte)
- Sidekicks: Hrigg Roundrook and Tem Temble
Last session, I set up the assault on Camp Carrionclay, including some preliminary reconnaissance with Yseult’s familiar (and a very successful stealth check). The plan would be for Fletch, Sabelina, and the Sidekicks to sneak across the wetlands under the cover of night, and Sabelina would use Control Water to basically use most of the water in the wetlands to create a wave that would extinguish the fires in the camp and knock a bunch of the guards off their feet. At that point, Drystan and Yseult would teleport in using Dimension Door, with Yseult’s Familiar picking out a spot. At which point they’d get the keys to the cells for the prisoners off the guards. Additionally, Yseult knew “Charm Monster”, and she’d use that to charm the Bulette in one of the cells, and have him also attack the guards.
To make a long story short, the plan worked. This wasn’t because I was pulling my punches either – the dice went their way for this plan – the guards kept failing saves against the battering waves (which also damaged the driftwood-built palisaide which allowed the party and prisoners to escape using Water Walk), which kept knocking them prone. The adventure sets up this particular part of the terrain as being regularly flooded, which meant it felt reasonable for there to be water that the characters can use with a Control Water spell to generate these big waves (or, if opponents are in water, to create a whirlpool). It’s a 4th-level spell; it’s supposed to be powerful.
Eventually, there were a couple of Sivak draconians who were actually able to keep their feet long enough to get to Yseult & Sabelina. The one who attacked Sabelina did do enough damage to bloody her, and to the same for the one who reached Yseult. Unfortunately for the Red Dragon Army, the one that damaged Sabelina did so after the Control Water had done the majority of its dirty work, and the one that damaged Yseult did so while Drystan was nearby and before she’d released the Bullette. This meant that Drystan went Nova on the second Sivak, and Yseult was able to free and charm the Bullette. The Sivak got Fletch going nova on him before he could attack again, and that, plus a Holy Weapon from Hrigg, took him out of commission.
In all, the party was able to get in, free the prisoners, clear the base (and also retrieve the Dragon Egg), and get out in about 4 rounds – helped by the charmed Bullette. By the time that the Black Dragon showed up, the party had gotten well away across the wetlands, leaving the Black Dragon to roar its vengeance once he figured out what had been stolen.
As Yseult’s player said on our Discord after the session, “Y’all I’m still so proud of us for pulling off a plan. A Cunning Plan.” We leveled up at the end of the session.
Next Time, we hand over the egg, and I think we’ll end up wrapping up this chapter.
